The mute lions of Chain Bridge

The sculptor János Marschalkó also worked on
the sculptures of the Hungarian Academy of
Sciences, the Vigadó, and the Rudasfürdő, but
his most famous work was the four lions for the
Chain Bridge (1852).
According to legend, the lions’ “disability” was
discovered by a shoemaker's apprentice. The
poor artist, ashamed, jumped from the Chain
Bridge into the Danube that day – and, according
to rumor, he became the bridge’s first suicide.
