The structure and operation of modern day computers has been largely determined by the work of the brilliant mathematician János Neumann ( who among many other achievements also founded the mathematical discipline of the inspiration for dr. Strangelove.) Up to that point, computers were programmed by altering their circuitry. Neumann’s insight was to incorporate stored programs, so that a program is effectively treated as part of the stored data. This allowed for much quicker programming of a much more flexible computer.
