Leo Szilárd – Inventor of the refrigerator

Did you know?

Leo Szilárd and Albert Einstein read one day in the newspaper of  the tragedy of a family who were killed at night by the escape of toxic gases from a faulty seal in their icebox. Shocked by the story, the scientists decided that they must find a safer solution. They achieved this by creating an electromagnetic pump which had no moving parts, thus eliminating the possibility of a leak. It worked by generating an electromagnetis field that moved a liquid metal. While their model was not put directly into commercial production, the principle is used to this day for cooling nuclear power stations.
